Why Japanese Pre-Loved Louis Vuitton Is Known for Condition, and How to Read the Ranks

Pre-loved Louis Vuitton from Japan has a reputation for good condition. The useful part of that reputation is not that every bag is near-mint. It is that condition is described clearly enough for you to choose.

This guide explains the nine condition ranks we use, shows how our own Louis Vuitton inventory splits by rank on 2026-09-21, and covers what Japanese law does and does not do for buyers.

Why Japanese pre-loved bags are known for condition

  • A written condition scale. Every item gets a rank from S to D, defined in plain language on our Condition Scale page.
  • Detailed notes and photos. Listings describe the outside surface, leather, handles, metal fittings, inside, pockets and odor.
  • Careful sourcing and checks. We buy from AACD member stores and licensed-dealer markets, and our in-house team checks every item.
  • Not a promise of near-mint. In the four popular models we checked, 46% to 67% of the bags in stock are Rank C to D, and priced accordingly.

The nine condition ranks, in plain English

Rank Label What it means for a bag
S New New and unused. Keeps its original condition and includes all accessories, such as tags, box and dust bag.
SA Like new (mint) Like new, or worn very little. Almost no signs of use.
A Excellent Slight signs of use, such as slight corner rubbing, minute scratches or light signs of use inside.
AB Very good Between A and B. Corner rubbing, small scratches or some interior use may be visible, but normal use isn't affected.
B Good Moderate signs of use: corner rubbing, moderate scratches or interior wear.
BC Fair Heavier use than B. Corner rubbing, scratches or stains can be conspicuous, and wear on the interior or metal hardware is clearly visible.
C Heavily used Strong signs of use, such as heavy corner rubbing, scratches or strong interior wear.
CD Damaged or for repair Rank C wear plus clear damage in some areas, such as hardware defects, tears or stains. Understand the condition fully before you buy.
D Junk Significant wear or damage. Sold assuming repair or maintenance. Returns based on condition are generally not accepted.

How our Louis Vuitton inventory splits by rank

We looked at the Keepall, Speedy, Neverfull and Alma bags in stock on 2026-09-21. Here is the share of each model in three rank groups.

Model Listings with a rank Rank AB or better Rank B to BC Rank C to D
Keepall 800 20% 14% 67%
Speedy 419 30% 24% 46%
Neverfull 115 38% 9% 53%
Alma 234 18% 22% 60%

Share of in-stock listings by condition rank, Brand Street Tokyo store, 2026-09-21 15:13 JST.

Rank C is the most common single rank for the Keepall (344 of 800 listings), and it is also the most common for the Speedy, Neverfull and Alma.

So "Japanese pre-loved" does not mean "always near-mint". What the ranking gives you is a clear label on every bag. If you want a near-mint bag, look at SA, A and AB. If price matters more, C and CD can be a fair choice once you have read the notes.

What condition does to price

Condition changes price more than almost anything else. Take the Speedy 25 model M41528, the most common Speedy 25 in our inventory. Its median listing price is $542 in Rank C to D, $1,184 in Rank B to BC and $2,263 in Rank AB or better.

Rank group Median listing price (USD) Listings

What Japanese law does and does not do

Japan's Secondhand Goods Business Act (古物営業法) requires licensed dealers to confirm the identity of the person they buy from, keep transaction records and report goods they suspect are stolen. It is a law that helps trace stolen goods. We did not find any provision that requires a dealer to verify that a brand item is genuine. This is not legal advice.

That is why authentication is the seller's job. Ours has several steps: a general condition check, a detailed check of materials, stitching and logos, an inspection with special equipment and a final review by experts. We use Entrupy when there is any doubt. Read more in our guide on how to authenticate Louis Vuitton or on our authenticity page.

How to shop by rank

  • Near-mint, for gifts or special occasions: look at SA and A. Expect the highest prices.
  • Everyday use at a fair price: look at AB and B. Read the notes on the corners and handles.
  • A low price, or a bag with character: look at BC and C, with the photos open and the notes read line by line.
  • Avoid CD and D unless you plan repairs. Rank D is sold assuming repair, and returns based on condition are generally not accepted.
